Abstract: “In all contemporary industrialized societies, women remain underrepresented in boardrooms and governments. While the gender gap has narrowed, women still face substantialchallenges climbing the corporate and political ladder. A male bias in the highest leadership positions is universal. In most past and contemporary societies, formal positions of political leadership have been, and continue to be, almost exclusively occupied by men. If women are currently no longer formally prohibited from holding positions of leadership and entrepreneurship, they remain less numerous or less powerful than their male counterparts. Women are less likely to reach the highest echelons in politics, business, science, and religion—and this is hard to justify, given that no consistent evidence exists of their being worse or better leaders by virtue of their gender. An attempt to explain the gender gap in leadership and entrepreneurship includes the consideration of gender stereotypes, prejudice, institutio”
