Abstract: Flame speeds are important flame characteristics in combustion processes as it determines the stability of the flame. Accurate experimental measurements of flame speeds require optical systems and diagnostic instruments, such as those in schlieren photography. However, these systems are more suitable in laboratory environments. In industrial furnaces, simpler methods are required to determine the flame speeds for comparison. Infrared cameras are used to detect ‘hot spots’ in furnaces, and since the radiation intensity of the flame is indicated by the brightness of the pixels in the images, a sequence of images can be used to determine the difference in the pixels’ brightness, allowing determination of the flame’s movement and subsequently the flame speed. Thus, in this study, a tool to determine the flame speeds using an image processing technique is presented. Preliminary results of the flame speeds from a 150 kWth coal fired combustion test rig were obtained. The combustion test rig

2. INVESTIGATIONS OF DELAMINATION IN GFRP MATERIAL CUTTING USING ABRASIVE WATERJET MACHINING

Authors: PRASAD D UNDE , RAVINDRA GHODKE

Abstract: he fiber-reinforced composite materials supersede the metals in innumerable domestic and commercial applications like automotive and aerospace industries because of its advantages like high strength to weight ratio, better mechanical properties, durability, impact resistance and most important the corrosion resistance properties. But the machining of these heterogeneous type of materials is serious apprehensions because most of the FRP manufacturers do not provide standard procedure to machine these type of materials. Delamination is considered the major defect in machining of the FRP materials. Glass fibre-reinforced polymer (GFRP) composite materials are one of the important materials and are economic alternative to engineering and other FRP materials. In this study the abrasive waterjet machining of GFRP material is studied. The abrasive waterjet machining (AWJM) is one of the advance machining process of material removal in which high velocity abrasive particles are used to remove

3. EFFECT OF SISAL FIBRE LOADING ON MECHANICAL PROPERTIES OF JUTE FIBRE REINFORCED EPOXY COMPOSITE

Authors: M. K. GUPTA , R. K. SRIVASTAVA

Abstract: The main purpose of this paper is to investigate the effect of sisal fibre loading on mechanical properties of jute fibre reinforced epoxy composite. The hybrid sisal /jute fibres reinforced epoxy composites are prepared by hand lay-up technique at different loading of fibres. Scanning electron microscopy is used to study the interfacial studies of prepared composites. A positive effect of hybridization is observed in this study. The results show that mechanical properties (tensile test, flexural test and impact test) of hybrid composite increase with increase in fibre loading up to 30 wt.%

Abstract: Problem solving is a fundamental element with essential skill in semiconductor industries. Without a proper problem solving analysis, the solution would be ineffective, and sometimes leads to painful consequences. This paper will describe the significance of model based solver application (MBSA) approach in early development of, first of kind (FOK) equipment and problem solving on chronic issues.

5. EFFECTS OF OPERATING CONDITIONS ON TEMPERATURE PROFILES OF A COAL-FIRED THERMAL POWER PLANT

Authors: AHMAD RASHIDI , AZMI AHMAD , HAMDAN HASSAN, MOHD , MOOK TZENG , NOOR AKMA WATIE MOHD NOOR

Abstract: Thermal power plants have begun to shift their choice of fuel to cheaper coals such as lignite to reduce operating costs and to maintain fuel sustainability. However, the properties of the cheaper coals are highly fluctuating and pose challenges to the combustion process, leading to higher slagging or fouling propensities. The slagging process starts with the deposition of ash, which in turn originated from the complex process of soot formation in the flame area. Therefore, any abnormalities such as temperature distribution imbalances can be traced through monitoring techniques at the combustion state within the flame area. In this study, an imaging technique based on the visible wavelength regime was used to capture the temperature profiles of a 700 MW boiler near the burner area for different coal types and boiler operating conditions. The temperature profiles will serve as a point of reference for the plant personnel to determine the combustion state with respect to the boiler opera

6. AERODYNAMIC EFFECTS OF DIMPLES ON AIRCRAFT WINGS

Authors: BHADRI RAJASAI , RAVI TEJ , SINDHU SRINATH

Abstract: This paper is concerned with analysis of the turbulent flow over dimpled aerofoil profiles. Dimples of varying aspect ratio are used to study the effects on the skin-friction drag and lift. An external flow study was performed using ANSYS FLUENT. Simulations for external flow configuration with and without dimples were carried out and analyzed in detail. The resulting pressure drop and drag were observed. The objective was to clarify whether or not dimples cause reduction of the skinfriction drag and if it would provide better lift.

7. ANALYSIS OF LASER WELDS ON STEEL PROCESSED BY Q-P PROCESS

Authors: IVAN VOREL , KATERINA OPATOVA , MARTIN FRANZ-XAVER WAGNER , OMID KHALAJ

Abstract: The use of new advanced high-strength (AHSS) steels is often constrained by the state of the art in related processing and fabrication technologies. These technologies are only beginning to encounter the requirements that these advanced materials bring. Typical examples are joining and, in particular, welding. The latter has a major effect on microstructure evolution and, in turn, on mechanical properties. A common concern is that welding is not at all suitable as the joining technique for a particular application. This is why an experiment has been carried out which involves laser welding of a high-strength Q-P-processed AHS steel. Its results suggest that, by combining these technologies, very good results can be achieved, particularly in components under dynamic loading.

8. WIND TUNNEL TESTING FOR BLENDED WING BODY AIRCRAFT WITH CANARD

Authors: WAHYU KUNTJORO , WIRACHMAN WISNOE , ZURRIATI MOHD ALI

Abstract: The Blended Wing-Body (BWB) aircraft is an unconventional aircraft that offers the aerodynamics performance advantages compared to the conventional aircraft. This type of aircraft has a unique design where the main body is blended together with the wing that gives the additional lift of the aircraft. In contrast to the conventional aircraft, the BWB has a poor stability due to the absence of the tail. A possible solution is by using a horizontal control surface, the canard, to improve the stability of the BWB. For this purpose, a comprehensive investigation of the aerodynamic behavior of the BWB with canard is important. The experimental works were performed on a scale model and tested in a low speed wind tunnel. Angles of attack,  varied from -10 to 10 degree, as well as canard setting angles, . The investigations were carried out at Reynolds Number of 3 x 105. The results show that the canard contributes a small lift forces but with the increase of drag to the BWB. On the stability
