1. EMPLOYEE- THE KEY TO PRODUCTIVITY TO ENCOUNTER THE CHALLENGES OF GLOBALIZATION IN THE CONTEXT OF BANGLADESH

Authors: M. A. AKKAS

Abstract: The world is becoming a global village. In fact we are living in a borderless economy. A country, whether developed or developing cannot exist in separation. Globalization creates both opportunities and threats or challenges for the nation states. Review of literature reveals that developed countries are monopolizing the fruits of globalization and developing countries like Bangladesh could not reap the benefits of globalization due to lack of preparedness. This paper mainly focuses on examining the opportunities and challenges of globalization in the context of Bangladesh. The paper suggests that Bangladesh can successfully take on the challenges of globalization by encouraging productivity through its people. This paper recommends to implement people driven strategy to enhance productivity at the enterprise level in Bangladesh.

3. A FUZZY BAYESIAN BELIEF NETWORK APPROACH FOR ASSESSING THE OPERATIONAL RELIABILITY OF A LINER SHIPPING OPERATOR

Authors: J. WANG , N. H. MOHD SALLEH

Abstract: Container liner shipping is a highly competitive industry. With today’s competitive environment, many liner shipping operators have acknowledged that having high operational reliability is a vital element for better overall performance and commitment to achieve a better competitive advantage. Operational reliability has become a key element for liner shipping operators to distinguish themselves from their competitors in the container liner shipping industry. This paper proposes a novel mathematical model for assessing operational reliability of a liner shipping operator using a combination of different decision-making techniques such as a symmetric model, Fuzzy Set Theory, and Bayesian Belief Network (i.e. Fuzzy Bayesian Belief Network). This assessment model is capable of helping liner shipping operators to conduct a self-assessment of operational reliabilgity for enhancing their business performance in the container liner shipping industry.

4. CUSTOMERS’ EVALUATION OF SAUDI FEMALE AS SELLERS

Authors: HANAN SAIDI , YOSRA MISSAOUI

Abstract: Salespeople in many countries especially the developing ones are just telling about their companies' products because they are unaware of the real role of sellers. In Saudi Arabia, labor market is totally for men with minor segments for women especially in education and health sectors. Recently Saudi government has taken a number of promising legislative steps to promoting women’s employment and to increasing the presence of women in many domains that she couldn’t enter to it before. Now, Saudi women are taking salesmen positions in many stores especially those specialized in women’ goods and services. This new experience for Saudi women has not been evaluated from consumer point view. So, the aim in this paper is to explore the problems that Saudi female customers are facing with these new sellers. After discussing the salespeople’ characteristics in the light of the previous academic researches and the depth interviews with seven focus group of Saudi women customers, this study finds

7. CHINESE PERCEPTION IN MEXICO FROM THREAT TO OPPORTUNITY

Authors: KATHERINE ROSERO

Abstract: The Sino-Mexican relationship was developed amidst diplomatic divergences, economic competition, and the creation of new alliances. It is not new that the rise of China as a worldwide economic power brought some collateral consequences to the international community. Mexican economy is mostly specialized in manufacturing production; therefore, the inclusion of Chinese massive manufacture into the international market is causing high repercussions within the country. In addition, the evident inequality in trading and lack of representative investment from China indicates a clear disadvantage for Mexico. Meanwhile, Mexico maintains a positive attitude towards the PRC and could develop a change in the direction of the policies applied to China. This study exhibits the causes and consequence of the market competition between both countries. Within the study, one can conclude that Mexico is the perfect example of a country that valued a possible threat to transform it into an opportunity fo

10. ABSTRACT FORMS OF THINKING: ADOLESCENT BULLYING AND SUICIDE

Authors: DENISE SHELLEY NEWNHAM

Abstract: Categorization is fundamental to human existence (Saljo and Hjorne, 2009). Essential as it may be this form of thinking has negative consequences. Bullying has become a public concern in the United States and the United Kingdom due to large scale shootings and suicides. King-Shaw (2008) maintains that adolescent who do not have the needed support from teachers, parents or friends may experience long term psychological problems or resort to suicide. A Change Laboratory (Virkkunen and Newnham, 2013) was held with 35 immigrant school going adolescents. The results revealed that there is indeed a process of internalization of the social world but that it is personally transformed in order to arrive at a negative or positive form of sense making. The adolescents reworked the negative ways of perceiving their socio-cultural spaces and selves through questioning socio-cultural abstract forms of thinking.

Authors: ANNA SAFRANKOVA , JANA KANTOROVA , VLADIMIRA KOCOURKOVA

Abstract: The paper focuses on the issue of inclusion and its importance in the environment of kindergartens. The issue is presented both from the viewpoint of theoretical starting points and the perspective of selected research findings focused especially on perception of inclusion by teachers. We believe that inclusive environment is strongly related to the character of kindergarten climate and the area of respect for a child’s needs and the level of primary prevention of risk behaviour in children at the same time. The contribution is one of the outputs of the project IGA_PdF_2014018 “Climate of Kindergarten Respecting the Child’s Needs as a Factor of Primary Prevention of Risk Behaviour

12. DOMESTIC DEMAND AS A DRIVING FACTOR OF STRUCTURAL CHANGES IN THE BRIC ECONOMIES EVIDENCE FROM 1995 – 2011

Authors: ALES KOCOUREK

Abstract: The article quantifies the structural changes that have taken place during the period 1995 – 2011 in the four emerging markets forming the BRIC grouping. Author discusses the consequences of these changes for the grouping as a whole and for its individual members. In agriculture, hunting, forestry, fishing, electricity, gas, and water supplies, transport, post and communication, but also in public administration, education and health the driving forces of the restructuring have been formed by the domestic customers in the BRIC emerging markets. The results for China and India show a transition from primary manufacturing and from production of merchandise with low added value to more sophisticated goods. In the Brazilian and Russian sectors of mining, quarrying, and partly also in manufacturing the foreign demand for exports (coming mainly from China and India) plays a crucial role in changing the output structure of these economies

15. STUDY ON IMPROVING THE THEORY OF PLATE BENDING

Authors: OWUS MATHIAS IBEARUGBULEM

Abstract: This paper presents study on improving the theory of plate bending. In doing this, it was assumed that none of the components of stress tensor and strain tensor shall be neglected. This assumption presupposes that all the components of stress tensor and strain tensor are significant. Constitutive equations were determined. Equilibrium equations of a static body at state of stress was used in conjunction with equations of strain-displacement and constitutive equations to determine the improved governing equation and stress resultants. A numerical problem was solved for a square plate simply supported at all the four edges. Obtained result indicated that maximum deflection and bending moment are -0.003377qa4/D and -0.0397125qa2 respectively. The corresponding values from classical theory are 0.00414qa4/D and 0.05163qa2 respectively. It was observed that the maximum deflection and bending moment from classical theory were higher than the magnitude of those from the present study by 18% an

16. EXPERIMENTAL INVESTIGATION OF COLD-FORMED STEEL SCREW CONNECTION

Authors: ADELINE NG LING YING , MEI CHEE CHIANG

Abstract: This paper presents a test program on screw connections of thin steel sheets using single shear connection and moment connection tests. The structural behavior of the screw connections were studied by varying the thickness of the steel sheets, number and arrangement of screws for each connection. The failure loads and failure modes were obtained from the tests. The failure modes observed were net section tension, tilting and bearing failure. No buckling was observed in the moment connection joint. The test strength was compared with the predicted strength using the current specifications for cold-formed steel structures. It is shown that the strength of the single shear screw connection predicted by the current specifications is generally conservative. However, the strength predicted for the moment connection joint is not conservative.

17. DIRECT STRENGTH METHOD APPROCH FOR INDIAN COLD FORMED STEEL SECTIONS WITH AND WITHOUT PERFORATION

Authors: ALTAFHUSEN P PINJAR , ANILKUMAR S

Abstract: Cold-formed steel section are extensively used in industry and many other non-industry constructions worldwide, it is relatively a new concept in India. Cold-formed steel sections have been developed as more economical building solutions to the alternative heavier hot-rolled sections in the commercial and residential markets. Cold‐formed steel (CFS) structural members are commonly manufactured with perforations to accommodate plumbing, electrical, and heating conduits in the walls and ceilings of buildings. Current design methods available to engineers for predicting the strength of CFS members with perforations are prescriptive and limited to specific perforation locations, spacing, and sizes. The Direct Strength Method (DSM), a relatively new design method for CFS members validated for members with and without perforations, predicts the ultimate strength of general CFS members with the elastic buckling properties of the member cross section. The design compression strength of Indian

18. AN APPRAISAL OF SANDCRETE BLOCKS QUALITY A CASE STUDY OF KATSINA, NIGERIA

Authors: HAMISU B. IMAM , MOHAMMAD S. YUSUF

Abstract: Part of Katsina city in Northern Nigeria experienced serious building collapse during the previous and current rainy season. The collapsed buildings turned into heap of rubbles which can hardly be used as hardcore. This study assessed the quality of sandcrete blocks manufactured by block industries in Katsina city where sample of blocks from various block-making industries were collected in the study area. Water absorption ratio was determined prior to the determination of the compressive strength of individual blocks. The values of water absorption ratio for samples D1, H1 and H2 are above the maximum water absorption of 12% recommended in the Nigerian Industrial Standard. The result of the compressive strength indicates that none of the block-making industry in Katsina city conforms to the NIS minimum 2.5 N/mm2 standard for strength characteristic. All stake holders should put hands together to salvage the hopeless situation in the block-making industries in Nigeria.

19. BEHAVIOR OF CASTELLATED BEAM COLUMN DUE TO CYCLIC LOADS

Authors: DJAMALUDDIN RUDY , MARA JUNUS , PARUNG HERMAN , TANIJAYA JONIE

Abstract: The purpose of this study was to determine the behavior of castella beams reinforced with concrete due to cyclic loading, so that the beam can be used as a structural element for receiving seismic load. Test beam consists of beam castella fabricated from normal beam (CB), castella beams with concrete filler between the flange (CCB) and normal beam (NB) as a comparison. Results showed castella beam (CB) has the advantage to increase the flexural capacity and energy absorption respectively 100.5% and 74.3%. Besides advantages, castella beam has the disadvantage that lowering partial ductility and full ductility respectively 12.6 % and 18.1%, decrease resistance ratio 29.5 % and accelerate the degradation rate of stiffness ratio 31.4%. By the concrete filler between the beam flange to improve the ability of castella beam, then the beam castella have the ability to increase the flexural capacity of 184.78 %, 217.1% increase energy absorption, increase ductility partial and full ductility r

20. EVALUATION OF SHORT PILES BEARING CAPACITY SUBJECTED TO LATERAL LOADING IN SANDY SOIL

Authors: JAFAR BOLOURI BAZAZ , JAVAD KESHAVARZ

Abstract: Almost all types of piles are subjected to lateral loads. In many cases, however, the applied lateral loads are comparable with gravity loads. Lateral loads and moments are generally induced from wind and earthquake. All piles which are subject to lateral loads are usually divided into two categories: long piles and short piles. The general methods to estimate lateral bearing capacity of piles are based on ultimate bearing capacity and allowable horizontal displacement for short and long piles respectively. Several theoretical methods including Hansen, Broms, Petrasovits, Meyerhof, Prasad and Chari have been proposed to predict lateral bearing capacity of piles in cohesion-less soils. All these theories are based on simplified soil pressure distribution assumption along the pile length. In practice the Broms method is most popular, since it is simple and applicable for both of short and long piles. In the present research steel pipes are used as pile in laboratory to evaluate lateral c

21. A NEW METHOD AND DEVICE FOR APPLICATION OF BONDED PRE-STRESSED FRP LAMINATES

Authors: REZA HAGHANI , MOHAMMAD AL-EMRANI

Abstract: Using bonded fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) laminates for strengthening and repair of structural members has been proven to be an effective and economic method. High strength and stiffness, light weight and good fatigue and durability properties of FRP composites together with advantages offered by adhesive bonding have made it a suitable alternative for traditional strengthening and repair techniques. It has also been recognized that pre-stressing the FRP laminates prior to bonding would bring additional advantages such as reduced crack widths, postponing the yielding in tensile reinforcement, increasing the load bearing capacity and saving reinforcement material. Using pre-stressed laminates, however, is associated with very high interfacial stresses in the bond line at the laminate ends, which necessitates the use of mechanical anchors. This paper presents a new method and a device for applying pre-stressed FRP laminates to flexural structural members without the need for mechanical

Authors: DE BIASE C , PETRELLA B

Abstract: In Italy, unauthorized building is a very common phenomenon. In the present paper, we show the first results of a research focused on the impact of unauthorized buildings on urban and local systems, which frustrates the city plans and the previsions done before. For a start, it is appropriate to underline that if we want to know the amount and the quality of unauthorized building in the Italian Regions we need to proceed with a direct survey since Italian institutions, both at a national and at a local level, have not publicized any datum even if nearly thirty years have passed since the first national law concerning “building sanction” (Erbani, 2003). Italian laws determining rules and conditions in order to get building indemnity have been promulgated in 1985 (L. n. 47), in 1994 (L. n. 724), and in 2003 (L. n. 326). Because of the inefficient controls and of the increasing of unauthorized building, in the Eighties, Italian Government promulgated a law establishing that it was possibl
