1. TWO DIMENSIONAL SPACE CURVE BASED CURVATURE INDUCED STIFFNESS FORMULATION FOR LARGE DEFORMABLE STRUCTURAL CABLES

Authors: M. VIGNARAJAH , PADMANATHAN KATHIRGAMANATHAN , RAVI WIJESIRIWARDANA

Abstract: In this paper, we present a curvature based modification to the existing beam element formulation to model cables which undergoes large displacements. The proposed approximation is numerically tested against the P-delta formulation and true nonlinear formulation of cables. As a result, a limiting value for the curvature based stiffness is reported.

2. A REVIEW ON GROUND GRANULATED BLAST SLAG (GGBS) IN CONCRETE

Authors: ESKINDER DESTA SHUMUYE , ZHAO JUN

Abstract: Construction industry consumes a huge volume of concrete every year, and it is expected that it demand may increase soon. Concrete is one of the most widely used construction materials; main ingredient of concrete is cement. The demand for concrete as a construction material is on the increase. However, the production and utilization of cement causes pollution to the environment and reduction of raw material (limestone). The production of Portland cement worldwide is increasing annually. The current contribution of greenhouse gas emission from Portland cement production signifies the need for supplementary cementitious material as a supplementary pozzolanic material for concrete. This leads to the intensification of interest towards the utilization of wastes and industrial byproducts in order to minimize the Portland cement consumption. This paper reviews on the use of GGBS as a partial pozzolanic replacement of cement in concrete. The literature shows that GGBS was found to enhance th

3. ASSESSMENT FOR THE DETERMINATION OF PILE CAPACITY USING TWO TYPES OF LOADING TESTS WITH ANALYTICAL METHOD AND NUMERICAL SIMULATION

Authors: BUDIJANTO WIDJAJA , SHIENNY LILIANTO

Abstract: The foundation is the lowest component of a structure and determines the robustness of a building. The bearing capacity of a pile is the main aspect that determines the strength of a foundation. Therefore, the bearing capacity must be carefully analyzed to avoid failure of the building. The actual bearing capacity is usually obtained using static axial loading test. This research aims to determine the ultimate bearing capacity of a bored pile with a diameter of 1,200 mm and a length of 50 m by using the reaction pile and Osterberg Cell systems. This research also compares the results with those of conventional method, field interpretation, and computer software (i.e., Plaxis and RS Pile). For the reaction pile system, the pile capacity difference between the Davisson (2,110 tons) and the Reese and Wright methods is 1.9% and that of RS Pile is 8.7%. By contrast, for the O-Cell system, the pile capacity difference between the Chin (3,620 tons) and the Reese and Wright methods is 7.9%. Re

5. IMPROVING EARTHQUAKE PERFORMANCE OF REINFORCED CONCRETE FRAMES WITH CFRP

Authors: ERTAN SULEV , FATIH ALTUN

Abstract: Better understanding reinforced concrete behaviour greatly enhances ones grasp of design essentials and helps to improve them further. Therefore, especially laboratory research activities play an important role in designing earthquake resistant structures and retrofitting existing ones. Through experimental research activities fundamental principles can be put forward to prevent structures undergoing excessive damage during earthquakes. In this study it is aimed to present to seismic behaviour of a one-storey and one span reinforced concrete frame retrofitted by CFRP wrapping. Displacement controlled loading is applied and hysteretic curve of the system is obtained. The corresponding backbone curve is drawn and results are discussed in terms of strength and ductility. By identifying crack development in terms of crack locations and intensity it is aimed to track changes in system behaviour. With hysteretic curve has been demonstrated energy consumption. As a result of experimental data

6. EVALUATION OF DEFLECTIONS FOR POST-TENSIONED FLAT PLATES WITH TWO-WAY TENDON LAYOUT

Authors: KYONG MIN RO , MIN SOOK KIM , YOUNG HAK LEE

Abstract: Post-tensioned concrete flat plate structures has many advantages such as reduction of overall member thickness and deflections. Several authors have discussed the influence of the tendon layout on deflections of flat plates. However, few information is available on the deflections of post-tensioned flat plate considering tendon layout types. In this study, flexural tests on a concrete flat plate specimen was performed in order to evaluate the deflection according to the two-way tendon layout. The test results were analyzed to propose the nonlinear finite element model taking into account the nonlinearity of concrete. This proposed model is capable of prediction of the deflections considering tendon layout.

7. EVALUATION OF THE BURSTING FORCE OF POST-TENSIONED ANCHORAGE ZONES

Authors: KYONG MIN RO , MIN SOOK KIM , YOUNG HAK LEE

Abstract: In Post-tensioned concrete beams, the longitudinal compressive stress from concentrated to linearly distributed produces high transverse tensile stresses in the vertical direction. When this tensile stresses exceed the modulus of rupture of the concrete, the anchorage zone has cracks. The appropriate vertical reinforcement is required based on calculation of tensile stresses (bursting stresses). In this study, the analytical results were used to examine the validity of different proposals for bursting force. The angle of tendons, eccentricity, and shape of anchorage were considered as variables. This comparison demonstrates that the Morsch equation is able to predict bursting force reasonably well than the other equations.

8. MAKING SAFE CORRIDOR BY ENGINEERING INTERVENTIONS AND ENFORCEMENT INTERVENTIONS IN KARNATAKA (INDIA)

Authors: B.L. SWAMI , RAJ R.D. KIRORI

Abstract: Road fatalities in India have increased to 150,785 in year 2016. Karnataka, a major Indian state, appeared at 4th rank with 11,133 road fatalities. Karnataka lost 17.8 persons per 100,000 population against India average of 11.9 persons. Karnataka is committed to road safety, therefore, in order to reduce road injuries by multi-sectoral interventions, an existing two lane undivided road section- Belgaum to Yaragatti (62 km)- was selected as a pilot project based on recommendations of iRAP (International Road Assessment Programme) under Safe Corridor Demonstration Programme (SCDP) funded by World Bank. Road crash data of the corridor were collected of past five years for analysis and proposed engineering designs were reviewed. Engineering interventions modified eight major junctions with medians, right turning lanes, 31 minor junctions with improved road signs and markings, construction of walkways with guard rails near most junctions, bus-bays and shelters, traffic calming, overall roa

Authors: HUSHAM T. IBRAHIM , ALI H. AL-ABOODI , SARMAD A. ABBAS

Abstract: Estimating of Suspended Sediment Load (SSL) in rivers is extremely important for planning and managing of the water resource projects. Support Vector Machine (SVM) and Gene Expression Programming (GEP) techniques are used for estimating SSL in four kilometers along Tigris River, located in upstream Al-Amarah Barrage; Maysan Province; Southern Iraq. Twenty-sections are selected for the purpose of the field measurement of SSL, which include measurement of flow velocity. For applying main object of this research, measured river velocities at these sections are used as the input variables of data mining techniques and the model output is SSL at these river sections. Cross validation method is used to estimate the performance of the models results, a random set of rows is selected to each validation fold after stratifying on the target variable. Three statistical parameters (root mean square error, mean absolute error and coefficient of correlation) are used to evaluate the performance of m
