1. EFFECT OF UNSILANIZED AND SILANIZED FLY ASH ON DAMPING PROPERTIES OF FLY ASH FILLED FIBER REINFORCED EPOXY COMPOSITE

Abstract: The damping characteristic of fly ash filled fiber reinforced epoxy resin was examined by varying the fly ash concentration from 0 to 30% by weight. Dynamic Mechanical Analyzer (DMA) was used to determine the temperature dependency of damping factor (tan δ). The testing was done under 3-point bending mode with frequency input of 10Hz at ramp rate of 5°C/min. The unsilanized and silanized fly ash concentration effect was compared and fly ash concentration limit for better damping property was ascertained. It was found that the glass transition temperature (Tg) and tan δ values improved with addition of fly ash up to certain point beyond which any further addition decreased Tg and tan δ. However the storage modulus and loss modulus increase with an increase in fly ash concentration. It was also found that silanized fly ash had lower tan δ value as compared to unsilanized fly ash.

2. BEHAVIOUR OF WELDING CURRENT IN SUBMERGED ARC WELDING

Abstract: Influence of the process parameters on the weld deposit area and microstructure have been studied using bead on plate submerged arc welding process. It was found that the weld deposit area was affected by weld parameters like welding wire feed rate, welding speed, open circuit voltage, and contact-tube-to-work distance. The effect of welding current on weld deposit area has been studied independently by making a separate model for welding current. This is due to the fact that it is not possible to control the current in welding in semi-automatic processes unless it is a constant current welding process. Since the open circuit voltage was also one of the parameters, therefore, controlled variation of both the parameters wasn’t possible. The current automatically adjusts to a value at which the burn off rate and the wire feed rate are in equilibrium. 3. BIOMIMETIC FLAPPING WING AERIAL VEHICLE

Abstract: The aim of the project is to develop a flapping wing aerial vehicle (FWAV) designed using a biomimetic approach; replicating the flying patterns of birds. The development of FWAV is complicated and it involves light weight design, power transmission design, flight controls, low Reynolds number flight, energy supply, etc. An angle of attack is generated during each wing stroke by a spatial mechanism that is driven by a rotary actuator. A 129g, 927mm span two wing prototype has been developed. It is capable of producing required lift and thrust. The FWAV prototype produces a symmetric and steady flapping motion.

5. STABILITY OF SIMPLY SUPPORTED SMART PIEZOLAMINATED COMPOSITE PLATES USING FINITE ELEMENT METHOD

Abstract: Piezolaminated smart structures are mostly used as light weight structures to control structural response in various structural applications. Piezoelectric materials possesses a property of direct and converse piezoelectric effects which can be adequately employed to control the deflection, vibration, shape and buckling of the structure. Due to the application of piezoelectric materials to control structural response, stability and control of light weight structures tends to be the governing criterion which requires significant attention. A finite element methodology is developed for stability analysis of smart piezolaminated composite plates subjected to combined action of electrical and mechanical loading. The finite element formulation is based on higher order shear deformation theory. Numerical analysis is made for stability analysis of simply supported piezolaminated plate
