1. STUDY OF SOIL EROSION AROUND AN ISLAND IN A NATURAL STREAM

Abstract: As per Government of India, India is losing 5,334 million tonnes of soil every year due to soil erosion [The Hindu, Nov 26, 2010]. Another survey says soil erosion in India estimated to be occurring on 147 million hectares of land including 94 mha from water erosion, 16 mha from acidification, 14 mha from flooding, 9mha from wind erosion, and 7 mha from a combination of factors. [R. Bhattacharya, Sustainability 2015, 7]. In this study based on mobile river bed setup, plan form development around an island and corresponding soil erosion and deposition are evaluated. Directional current (DCM) and acoustic Doppler Velocity (ADV) meters are used for the field measurements of velocity and turbulence particularly in the interface region between main channel and floodplain. 2. ANALYSIS OF SINGULAR STRESS FIELDS ALONG A SINGULAR LINE NEAR THE VERTEX IN 3D PIEZOELECTRIC BONDED JOINT USING A CONSERVATIVE INTEGRAL(IN CASE OF TWO-REAL SINGULARITIES)

Abstract: In the present study, singular stress fields in three-dimensional piezoelectric bonded joint with two-real singularities are investigated at a vertex and along a free edge (a singular line) of an interface. A conservative integral formulation is developed for calculating the intensity of singularity at a point located on the singular line of three-dimensional piezoelectric bonded joint. The intensities of the singularities at several positions along the singular line of the interface are determined. The relationships between singular stress fields at the vertex and along the singular line are considered.

3. VIBRATION ANALYSIS FOR TAPERED ROLLER BEARING

Abstract: This paper investigated the vibration behavior of a tapered roller bearing (TRB). A two degree-of-freedom vibration model was adopted for estimating the radial vibrations of TRBs subjected to angular misalignment and unbalance force due to the rotor eccentricity. The bearing stiffness used in the system equations of motion was determined from a five degree-of- freedom model of TRBs. The system equations of motion for the bearing were numerically solved using the Runge-Kutta algorithm. The bearing vibration responses in frequency and time domains were obtained and discussed considering the effects of rotational speed, axial preload, and angular misalignment.

4. NUMERICAL ANALYSIS OF R/C CYLINDRICAL SHELL WITH HOOP EDGE BEAMS UNDER EXTERNAL PRESSURE

Abstract: Reinforced concrete (R/C) cylindrical shell with hoop edge beams was analyzed by using the nonlinear FEM. R/C shell with free edges must be stiffened by the edge beam. From the numerical results of the previous papers, the minimum size of the edge beam was placed on both hoop edges under self weight as the beam having the maximum ratio of the strength to the weight. In this paper, three kinds of connecting position between R/C shell and the edge beam were considered. One was the concentric connection of R/C shell and the beam (Type C). The second one was the shell connected at the top of the beam (Type L). The third one was the shell connected with the bottom of the beam (Type U). R/C shell was pin supported on the meridian and free on the hoop edges. Uniformly distributed pressure was applied to the model. From the n13umerical analyses, it was concluded that Ty16pe L was efficient.

5. EXPERIMENTAL INVESTIGATION OF HEAT TRANSFER PERFORMANCE IN A TRIANGULAR PITCH PLAIN TUBES BUNDLE

Abstract: In the present study Nu correlation of tube side for triangular pitch plain tubes bundle is proposed. The performance of the current heat exchanger is investigated experimentally in a single phase. Ten different experiments were conducted for different flow rates in order to study the effect of different parameters on heat transfer coefficient correlation. Hot inlet temperature was kept at 25°C whereas, cold inlet temperature was kept at 15°C. Reynolds number was varied from 2300-20,000. Matlab code for modified Wilson plot method was also developed to overcome the assumption of Reynolds exponent in Wilson plot method. All the required parameters like temperature, flow rate and pressure were calculated using calibrated instruments. The tube-side Nu correlation was proposed and compared with existing correlations. The maximum difference came out to be 3.8% and 5.7% with Seider and Tate and Dittus-Boelter correlations respectively whereas, difference with Gnielinski correlation in turbul

6. NUMERICAL INVESTIGATION OF AL2O3/WATER NANOFLUID FORCED CONVECTION IN HORIZONTAL CIRCULAR TUBE SCHOOL OF MECHANICAL ENGINEERING, KYUNGPOOK NATIONAL UNIVERSITY, DAEGU 41566, KOREA

Abstract: Laminar forced convection of Al2O3/water nanofluid in a circular cross-section horizontal tube under constant surface heat flux has been studied numerically by employing single-phase model. The particle volume concentrations considered for analysis are 1%, 1.5% and 2% while the nano-particle size is 100nm. Effect of some parameters i.e. nano-particle concentration, surface heat flux and Reynolds number on the heat transfer characteristics has been analyzed. Selected range of Reynolds number is 200-1000. When compared with the previous published numerical and experimental result, it has been concluded that by applying a suitable correlation for the calculation of nanofluid effective thermo-physical properties, nanofluid heat transfer characteristics can be predicted accurately using the single-phase model

7. THE VIRTUAL 3D REPRESENTATION OF OLD RAILROAD AND STREET OF JINGTONG

Abstract: The purpose of this study is to represent the old Railroad and street culture of Jingtong, Taiwan. The study is conducted from an urban scale to a building level, including street facade, open space, and human behavior. 3D scan data have been collected and carefully integrated for the most effective illustration of local cultures. This study extended the size and the complexity of 3D scan to an urban environment by using a Faro Focus 3D® laser scanner. Experiencing an old street and railroad through the 3D scanned data of urban fabric has led to the creation of a new fabric definition in terms of building enclosures and flexible part of fabric. The scan data can be used as the most updated digital reference for urban fabric study. A new application paradigm of 3D scan data is proofed to be useful in illustrating a small town’s activity which is closely related to daily life.

8. FATIGUE CRACK GROWTH BEHAVIOR FOR MAGLEV SWITCH BEAM

Abstract: The fatigue crack growth (FCG) behavior of switch beam of the high speed maglev train was systematically investigated using finite element method (FEM) in this paper. Firstly, the stress hot spot of the maglev switch beam was abstained under the train running load (in-plane load) and displacement load during switch (out-of-plane load). Secondly, the stress intensity factors of the hot spot were analyzed under both in-plane and out-of-plane loads. Finally, the FCG rates and the paths for various initial crack positions and types were obtained via the FRANC 3D and ABAQUS based on the maximum circumferential stress criterion including the influence of fatigue life were derived.

9. THE EFFECTS OF COUPLING MISALIGNMENT ON VIBRATION OF ROTOR BEARING SYSTEM

Abstract: Misalignment is one of the most influential factors that affect the vibration of a rotor bearing system. This paper presented a combined analytical and experimental approach to investigate the effect of the coupling misalignment on the vibration behavior of a rotor supported by tapered roller bearings. First, a theoretical model was developed to predict the vibration in the rotor system subjected to angular misalignment in the flexible coupling. Then experimental measurements were made from an instrumented test-rig to verify the model. Finally, extended simulations were performed to investigate the effect of misaligned amplitude, rotational speed disk position, bearings distance, and arrangement on the vibration behavior of the rotor. Simulation results showed that the coupling misalignment leads to vibration with multiple harmonics of rotational speed, and that misaligned coupling introduced anisotropic nature in vertical and horizontal vibration responses of the rotor.

10. CFD MODELING FOR THERMAL PERFORMANCE OF CLOSED LOOP PULSATING HEAT PIPE IN BOTTOM HEATED MODE

Abstract: In this research work a computational model for closed loop pulsating heat pipe (CLPHP) has been developed in order to study its two phase flow process and predict its thermal performance. The pulsating heat pipe of 1.3mm internal diameter in vertical bottom heat mode was simulated with unsteady model. Water was taken as working fluid. Volume of fluid model (VOF) in FLUENT was selected for multiphase modelling, also continuum surface force (CSF) model was considered for effects of surface tension. The simulation with unsteady model was successful in reproducing the two phase flow process in CLPHP and oscillation caused by the pressure difference along with the startup characteristics. During the working of CLPHP, lowest thermal resistance of 0.295 K/W was achieved. The simulation result obtained is consistent with the experimental results at the same condition.

11. FATIGUE CHARACTERIZATION OF BITUMINOUS BINDERS CONTAINING CRUMB RUBBER FROM END-OF-LIFE TIRES

Abstract: This paper presents the outcomes of an experimental investigation which focused on the fatigue behavior of bituminous binder for paving applications prepared by combining a single reference neat bitumen with different types of crumb rubber products derived from the processing of end-of-life tires. In the laboratory preparation of the blends, crumb rubber dosage was conveniently limited in order to obtain binders characterized by viscosity values compatible with standard operating conditions normally adopted in the production and compaction of bituminous mixtures. Results obtained from time sweep tests carried out in equi-stiffness conditions showed that fatigue performance is enhanced by the use of the considered crumb rubber modifiers with a dosage-dependent improvement of both fatigue life and crack propagation amplitude. Given that the considered crumb rubber products were quite similar, no significant effects were associated to changes of crumb rubber type.

Abstract: The main target of this research work is to show the differences of the National Structural Codes of the Philippines (NSCP) Seismic provisions of the 2 codes-- NSCP 1992 and the new one, NSCP 2010. In order to work out for the main differences of the Design Base Shear (V), the Linear Static Analysis (LSA), which is considered as the Static Lateral Force Procedure and the Response Spectrum Analysis (RSA), another method specified in the NSCP codes under the Dynamic Lateral Force Procedure were carried out to analyze a Three Storey Reinforced Concrete Public School Building. In the Dynamic Analysis, the maximum ground motion intensity, such as the peak ground acceleration (Amax) of the earthquake is considered. 13. A NEW BINDER MINERAL FOR CEMENT STABILIZED ROAD PAVEMENT SOILS

Abstract: Long-term performance of pavement structures is significantly impacted by the stability of the underlying soils. In situ subgrades often do not provide enough support required to achieve acceptable performance under traffic loading and environmental demands. NovoCrete® is a powder binder mineral for cement stabilized road pavements soils. NovoCrete® combined with Portland cement at optimum water content increases the crystallize formations during the hydration process, resulting in higher strengths, neutralizes pH levels, and provides water impermeability. These changes in soil properties may lead to transforming existing unsuitable in-situ materials into suitable fill materials. It can be used also for stabilization of recyclable aggregates and old asphalt pavement aggregate, etc. In the road construction works, this binder material is used for cement stabilization works. 14. OPTIMAL FRAMEWORK FOR RECONFIGURATION OF MANUFACTURING SETUPS USING NON DOMINATING SORTING GENETIC ALGORITHMS

Abstract: The concept of reconfigurable manufacturing system has emerged drastically as it reduces the product lead time and meets with the market demand efficiently. The performance of a manufacturing system lies on a set of planning and scheduling data incorporated with the machining capabilities keeping in view the market demands. The proposed work focuses on the formulation of an optimal framework for production over part families. Machine’s kinematic configurations are generated considering tool’s degree of freedom. The application of non-dominating sorting genetic algorithms over machine configurations makes this approach more reliable. A case study has been presented to illustrate the application of proposed model based on the technological constraints.
