1. INSPECTIONS AND ASSEMBIELS: WHEN TWO NEGATIVE EFFECTS TURN POSITIVE

Authors: MOSHE EBEN-CHAIME

Abstract: No process is perfect and defective items are produced in any process, but in commercial operations there are sales targets and/or orders to deliver. Therefore, a very basic rule is the compensation principle: a compensating unit must be produced for any defective unit. A common method for coping with defective items is to perform cleaning – inspect the items and remove defective units. Inspections however are error prone and the destructive effect of false rejections in serial processes is presented. In assemblies, there are mutual relationships among the components and the yield – the ratio of the number of conforming units to the total number of units diminishes very rapidly in the presence of defective components. Yet, it turns out that cleaning of defective assembly components prior to the assembly, improves quality and reduces waste simultaneously

2. FUTURE OF INTERNET BANKING AND BANKING STRATEGIES IN DEVELOPING COUNTRIES

Authors: KHADIJA SHAHID , MAHA IJAZ , SHAMA RAZI

Abstract: Escalating use of technology in all industries has resulted in the banking industry providing its customers with services electronically rather than over the counter. Over the past decade Internet banking has gained a lot of attention and hence it has become interesting to study factors that influence a person’s choice of using Internet banking over the traditional means of banking. A series of different techniques, such as structural equation modelling and confirmatory factor analysis, were used to determine which factor has the strongest impact on the adoption of Internet banking. The research goes on to conclude that out of the four factors adopted from the UTAUP model, three factors (perceived usefulness, security, and convenience) were seen to have a significant influence while one ( social influence) had an insignificant influence. This study highlights strategies for bankers to review and modify the strategies to retain customers. Further researches can include factors others th

3. THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN EMOTIONAL LABOR AND SERVICE QUALITY: THE MODERATING EFFECTS OF AESTHETIC LABOR AND AESTHETIC VALUE COMBINATION OF SUPERVISOR-SUBORDINATE

Abstract: The success of industry depends on the service quality it provides for its customers. Studies show that employees’ emotional labor is a crucial factor which influences service quality. However, past research on how the surface acting and deep acting of emotional labor impact staff’s performance has demonstrated inconsistent results, which indicates a possible moderator variable, might exist. According to the social cognitive theory, the present study holds the view that personal behaviors can be influenced by both personal and environmental factors. Taking this notion into account, the current study is to investigate the moderating effect of aesthetic labor and aesthetic value combination of supervisor-subordinate. The findings of the current study suggest that in a high-level aesthetic labor context, staff that employ surface acting can enhance the positive impact on service quality. Those who employ deep acting in a high-level aesthetic labor context can also help enhance the positiv

4. INTEGRATION OF KNOWLEDGE CREATION AND QUALITY MANAGEMENT PRACTICES IN THE UAE HOSPITALITY SECTOR

Authors: MALINI NAIR , SANOOP GEORGE

Abstract: This research study aims to link the study of Knowledge Creation through Quality Management Practices by using one of the four hypotheses proposed by Linderman, Schroeder, Zaheer, Liedtke, Choo ‘s model and validating the model by its application to the UAE hospitality sector. The purpose of this paper is to emphasize the achievement of organizational excellence due to the augmented integration of quality management practices viz continual improvement practices with knowledge creation. Several quality thought leaders have considered the role of knowledge in quality management practices. For example, Deming proposed The Deming System of Profound Knowledge™ that dealt explicitly with knowledge. However, various authors in the quality field diverge considerably when contemplating knowledge. Therefore, they propose an integrated view of quality and knowledge using Nonaka's theory of knowledge creation. This integrated view helps illuminate how quality practices can lead to knowledge creati

5. MEGACITIES, THE WORLD’S LARGEST CITIES UNLEASHED: MAJOR TRENDS AND DYNAMICS IN CONTEMPORARY GLOBAL URBAN DEVELOPMENT

Authors: CHRISTOPHER SMITH , CHUN LOK KRIS LI , NATASHA SHU GUO , SIMON XIAOBIN ZHAO

Abstract: By the year 2010, 10% of the world’s urban population was concentrated in one of 23 “megacities,” those with at least10 million people. In this study we ask two basic questions: will the megacity trend continue into the immediate and long-term future? and why do more and more people continue to concentrate in what are already the world’s biggest cities? In our empirical analysis we investigate the “internal” and “external” driving forces behind the global phenomenon of urban concentration over the past 6 decades. During this period the world’s biggest cities have continued growing faster than all the others, and we expect this trend to continue into the foreseeable future. We also emphasize a real difference between what we call “mega-local cities,” which are mainly located in the world’s developing countries, and the much more economically powerful “mega-global cities” of the developed world. Our findings also suggest that urban growth tends toward polarization: at first the largest c

6. MACROECONOMIC IMPACT OF THE IMPLEMENTATION OF ENERGY EFFICIENCY HOUSES IN RUSSIA

Authors: TAMARA ZININA , TATIANA ZHELTONOZHKO , GALINA SHARAYEVA

Abstract: The purpose of this study is to evaluate the macroeconomic effect of building energy-efficient houses in Russia. One-time investments for energy-efficient house are higher than for standard one due to additional costs of energy saving equipment and technologies, but they lead to specific savings in operating costs per each year of exploitation. As a result, total costs of ownership for a standard and energy-efficient house differ in favor of energy-efficient one. We calculate the payback period for additional investments in energy-efficiency for different climatic zones in Russia and accumulated savings for different scenarios of growth of energy-efficient house building share in total house building in Russia.

7. USING INNOVATIVE APPROACHES WHEN ANALYZING INFORMATION SYSTEMS (IS) FAILURE STORIES

Authors: LYNETTE DREVIN

Abstract: We are living and functioning in an ever-changing environment where technology plays a big role – in businesses and in individuals’ lives. Often information systems have to support a variety of these functions. However, failures within these systems are evident and often reported on. In this paper, certain results of a study are discussed where case histories were investigated in which IS stakeholders were asked to share their experiences concerning the development and use of an Information System (IS). They shared stories from their own perspective and context within the organization, focusing on failure situations. These narratives were analyzed making use of three approaches and taking into account the views of multiple-user groups. The contribution of this work was to use a multi-perspective lens in order to gain insight into different users’ experiences, to interpret the complexity of the situation, and to listen to the often small voices of lower level users. The benefit of using
